I recently rewatched North by Northwest with my novelist wife, who as usual pointed out the plotting flaws. It’s still a fine movie and Bernard Hermann’s music greatly enhanced the suspense. In fact, I believe the movie would’ve fallen flat without it. The opening theme doesn’t repeat throughout and the orchestrations are timed well to the action on screen. I’m also a big Mancini fan, but agree that some of his music could overwhelm the story and get repetitive (like in Breakfast at Tiffany’s). That said, the true test of great composition and orchestration is when you can play something 30 years later and it still rings true. It doesn’t first date advice itself.

Samuel, thanks for the clarification. Given that we are already deficit spending one thing that Obama CANNOT do is to pay down the debt management advice! It’s like my former wife used to do–use one credit card to pay off another. Still in debt and still paying interest on it!

But the government doesn’t already have the money in the bank somewhere that they borrowed to pay for the Iraq war for the next year. It hadn’t even been appropriated yet. So there isn’t money to spend on the boondoggles that you mention or to send back to the Treasury to pay off (or not borrow and add to) the debt.

It’s alarming that France seems to be able to articulate a consistent foreign office travel advice policy better than Obama. First Libya and now with respect to Iran, France taken the lead while the US, due to Obama’s lack of any discernable vision, plays second fiddle. I’m not saying that being thoughtful or deliberate is bad, nor that deferring to European nations closer to the problem is wrong. To the contrary that is probably sound and prudent. But Obama doesn’t come across as either of those. Instead he comes across as being weak and uncertain. Time to remove him from office.
